We are glad to share with you Connie’s journal notes of a trip we made to Greece in May 2001. We were with an Elderhostel group for their tour called Essence of the Greek Islands. We spent a total of 7 days in Athens (some before the Elderhostel and some after) and used local ferries for all travel over water. The tour focused on the Cycladic Islands of Paros, Delos, Mykonos, and Naxos—emphasizing their history, culture and archeology—as well as a stay on Santorini. The interest there was the newly discovered site of Akrotiri and the artifacts being discovered there, as well as the history of the eruption of the volcano in about 1600 BC and how it affected that whole area of the Aegean.
Our tour also included 5 days on Crete, with a great deal of emphasis on the Minoan culture and especially the sites of Knossos and Phaistos. The more contemporary history of the Venetian and Turkish influences was also explored.
We followed that with a week of timeshare exchange at the Golden Coast Resort at Marathon Beach on the Aegean, just east of Athens. This resort has just become the Club Med Athenia, with some timeshare units still included in the Club. While there we took a day trip to Delphi.
